Storybook-themed Kings Castle Park to get safety upgrades

Kings Castle Provincial Park in Gladstone, P.E.I., is getting a bit of a safety makeover, says Tourism Minister Rob Henderson.

Popular character figures will remain, with fresh coat of paint

Kings Castle Provincial Park in Gladstone, P.E.I., is getting a bit of a safety makeover, says Tourism Minister Rob Henderson.

The park is adorned with statues of storybook characters and unique play structures. Some have been there for decades.

Tenders have been called to replace some of the playground equipment to ensure safety, said Henderson.

But the charm and character of the park will remain, he said.

"The issue in this is really to upgrade some of the swings, some of the climbing walls that are there. You know, the regular playground equipment," said Henderson.

"So the Three Little Pigs and Snow White and some of those things, we'll probably be looking at some painting improvements on those, but not necessarily getting rid of those things. But anything that would be questionable from a safety perspective, those are the things that we want to replace."

The province expects the upgrades will cost about $15,000, said Henderson.

He hopes the improvements can be made before summer.

The project is part of an ongoing effort to upgrade day-use parks in the province.
