Stratford plans to put the brakes on speeders

The town of Stratford is putting speeding drivers on notice.

The town's population is growing faster than any other community in the province. But the mayor said the increase in the number of cars has also lead to an increase in the number of people driving too fast.

The town will soon release a traffic safety report to help tackle the problem.

Mayor David Dunphy said one of the key recommendations is to install traffic-circles.

"All three or four lanes of traffic come into the circle area," Dunphy explained. "You just veer right like a roundabout. Stopping isn't necessarily the goal here, because it typically releases more carbon into the environment, so a traffic circle, we feel, will move the traffic safely and slow it down at the same time."

Dunphy said circles will likely be installed on their two most problematic streets: Rosebank Road and Governors Lane.

He said in the immediate future, the city will put up stop signs at several intersections on the routes.
