Summerside mayor welcomes business scrutiny

Summerside's Chamber of Commerce put the city on notice Monday night that will be monitoring economic development with a public scorecard.

Summerside's Chamber of Commerce put P.E.I.'s city on notice Monday night that will be monitoring economic development with a public scorecard.

The chamber made the announcement in a presentation to council.

Chamber president Jonathan Greenan said overall his group is satisfied with how the city treats businesses. It would still like to see more support for business and a population strategy.

Greenan told council the chamber will develop a public scorecard, to keep it accountable.

We want to make sure that people who have been elected to represent our interests, which include certainly the interests of the business community, are listening to and hopefully responding to the needs of businesses, he said.

Mayor Bill Martin said he's committed to economic development and that council looks forward to exceeding expectations.

As long as their expectations are transparent, we understand what they are, they are reasonable, they're time-bounded, I'm totally on board with that, he said.

Council is just a few weeks away from tabling its first economic development strategy. As part of it, Martin said he plans to personally attend trade shows across the country, touting Summerside as a great place to live and do business.
