P.E.I. teachers, school staff featured in Guild art exhibition

Art teachers on P.E.I. inspire and foster lots of talent in their careers, helping students learn about their creative side.

Those same teachers have talents of their own, not just in instruction, but as artists in their own right.

Now a display of their work, plus some of their talented colleagues in the school system, is on display at a new exhibit at The Guild in Charlottetown.

It's the third show that the P.E.I. Visual Art Teachers Association has organized, according to Linda Shaw-Packard, the just-retired president of the association.

"We sent out an Island-wide notice to all of the employees of the public school branch, looking for participants," said Shaw-Packard. "Some of them are teachers of course, and some are custodians, some are educational assistants, and secretaries and cafeteria workers."

As well as painting, there is sculpture, metal work, fabric art, woodworking, photography and needlepoint.

"It's good to let the public know that the teachers and the workers in our schools, who work everyday with their students, have more than just teaching as an ability," said Shaw-Packard.

The exhibition will be on display at The Guild until Nov. 5.
