Teachers, students talk money April 15

About 20 P.E.I. teachers will be joining teachers from across Canada to take part in Talk with Our Kids about Money Day on April 15.

The day is targeted toward students in Grade 7 math and health classes.

But teachers at all grade levels are being asked to have an age-appropriate discussion about money with their classes.

Kieran Hennessey is the business curriculum specialist with the P.E.I. department of education.

He said Grade 7 students were chosen because they're just starting to use money they make through babysitting jobs, paper routes or receiving gifts of cash.

"I just think any conversation around the area of financial literacy is important at that age," said Hennessey.

"The conversations, I feel, needs to be started at a younger age. So if we can just get that ball rolling, even with one or two conversations, with students at that age, it's going to be a win."

The initiative was created by the Canadian Foundation for Economic Education, a not-for-profit, non-partisan group trying to improve economic and financial literacy in Canada.
