Credit Union Place in Summerside is home to a new tiny library thanks to Canada Reads and a group of grandparents who are raising their grandchildren.

"When they had the opportunity, they jumped at it," saidGloria Schurmanof theEast Prince Seniors' Initiative. "They're aware of the power of reading and the importance of literacy in the lives of their grandchildren."

The grandparents' group meets every Monday at Credit Union Place to share experiences and find support.

When offered a chance to decorate and find a home for one of the five tiny lending libraries from CBC's Canada Reads project, the group of seniors wanted to make sure everyone in Summersidehad access.

50 books already donated

"It's available to anybody and it's free, and that's huge."

Members of the group also plan to make sure the tiny lending library has a variety of book for all ages.

"At the launch I think we got about 50 books donated already," said Schurman.

"They decoratedit with nice pictures of the seashore and children reading, and we have a bright red roof with glitter on it, and jazzed it right up."

Schurman said she will keep the extra book in storage and replenish the tiny lending library as people borrow books.
