The Tourism Industry Association of P.E.I. said a pledge by the federal government to spend an additional $21 million on repairs to Province House is exciting news.

Association president Robert Jourdain said maintaining the historical value on P.E.I. is a priority.

"Province House is part of our foundation in terms of Confederation, you know the beginning of Canada. And it plays a large part in telling our story," said Jourdain.

"I truly believe that tourists when they come to the province are looking to hear more about us and telling our story. And so part of our culture is Province House."

Tourism officials say the investment of time and money will ensure the heritage building remains an attraction for many years to come.

A total of $41 million is being spent on renovations to the historic building.

Province House will remain closed while repair work is taking place. It is expected to take several years to complete.
