2 children rescued from ice floe by Charlottetown Fire Department

Charlottetown Fire Chief Randy MacDonald says two children were rescued from an ice floe in the Hillsborough River near Acadian Drive Sunday afternoon.

Charlottetown Fire Chief Randy MacDonaldsays two childrenwere rescued from an ice floe in the Hillsborough River near Acadian Drive Sunday afternoon.

Thecall came in at 3:20 p.m. that four people were in difficultyon the river but MacDonald says when firefighters arrived on scene,two had alreadymade it toshore. Two were still on the ice floe.

He says 25 firefighters were involved and they used what the firedepartment call a banana boat to rescuethe children.

Two photostweeted by the firedepartment show the rescue boat heading for the childrenon the ice floe and then returningto shore with two extra people in the boat.

Charlottetown Police Servicesand Island EMS also responded to the call.

The children,according to police, were rescued safely.

Charlottetown police tweeted areminder to warn everyone that changing temperatures are making ice conditions unsafe.
