Victoria buys $75K property needed to complete seawall replacement

The village of Victoria, P.E.I. has voted in favour of buying a $75,000 piece of property on the waterfront that's needed to move forward with the replacement of the seawall.

Community chair Ben Smith saidthe seawall work must be done to protect nearby properties.

"The seawall is collapsed there and the main problem is that in the right kind of storm, we could get a lot of damage to property that is located nearby, and the road and the wharf," he said.

"So to replace the seawall you need this piece of property. There is a huge hole there and if you have the wrong kind of storm, you know with a storm surge and a big wind, it will just come roaring in there."

Old school also being refurbished

Smith notedtaking out a loan to buy the land was just the first step.

In addition to its own gas tax money, he said council will now have to tap into some provincial and federal money to get the actual repair work done.

He said Victoria also plans to refurbish the old school and put in a green space or recreational area behind the fire hall.

The combined cost of all three projects is expected to be about $1.2 million.
