Visitors join in excavation of homestead

The excavation of a 150-year-old homestead in Orwell has expanded to allow more visitors to join in the work.

This is the second year for the archaeological dig on the edge of Orwell Corner Historic Village. The homestead dates back to 1860, and had seven owners before it was abandoned and collapsed in on itself in the 1930s.

"We get a lot of people coming through; we have a little display set up," said Provincial archeologist Helen Kristmanson.

"Really the objective here is a public archeology program, learn about what we do."

Kristmanson said it's not uncommon for large groups to offer to help.

"We have six two-by-two units open in anticipation of people coming and digging with us, so it gives us lots of room," she said.

Amongst the more interesting items recovered from the dig are a porcelain doorknob, a hatpin from one of the ladies who lived in the house, as well as evidence of a water pump or well and two large pieces of a coal stove.

Staff will be on site one or two days a week for the rest of the summer.
