Wear purple ribbons until February say women's advocates

Islanders are being asked to continue wearing their purple ribbons until Family Violence Prevention Week in February.

The P.E.I. Advisory Council on the Status of Women isencouraging people to keepthe ribbons on.

"It's a well-known campaign where people can show their solidarity against violence against women and children by wearing a purple ribbon all fall and straight through until Family Violence Prevention Week in February," said council chair, Kelly Robinson.

Over 17,000 purple ribbons were distributed across P.E.I. to honour and remember victims of violence.

There have been ten women murdered in the past 26 years on the Islandat the hands of men who knew them according to the council.

This year's campaign theme is 'healthy relationships and right relations do not include violence'.

Robinson said the idea is also to support theTruth and Reconciliation Commission and the ongoing call for an inquiry into murdered and missing Indigenous women.
