White Stripes don't disappoint

There were a couple of false rumours, but dedicated fans were able to catch an unscheduled performance of the White Stripes on the Charlottetown waterfront Wednesday.

The band played from a boat to about 200 fans who continued to chase the rumours. Previous crowds had gathered at Murphy Community Centre behind Province House for a rumoured 2:30 show. They went from there to a pavilion at Confederation Landing Park.

That guess was close. A little later, about 5 p.m., in a echo of the arrival of the Fathers of Confederation at the same spot in 1864, a boat with the performing duo aboard pulled to within metres of the shore of the municipal park.

The band has made of habit of these impromptu performances on this tour, which will see them play in every province and territory. In addition to jamming with elders in Iqaluit, the group has played:

  • On a bus in Winnipeg.
  • A downtown park in Whitehorse.
  • An Edmonton community centre.
  • A Saskatoon bowling alley.

The band played its scheduled concert at the Charlottetown Civic Centre Wednesday evening. The White Stripes' next concert is in Halifax Friday.
