Woman lobbies province for insulin pump

P.E.I. should join the rest of the country and provide some funding for insulin pumps, says a woman suffering from type 1 diabetes.

P.E.I. should join the rest of the country and provide some funding for insulin pumps, says a woman suffering from type 1 diabetes.

Kathleen Romans was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes as an adult, and she describes monitoring her condition as a constant worry.

"I would just have so much more confidence going through my life," said Romans.

"I know that I'll live longer and healthier. I have a 13-year-old son at home and it would be so much nicer for him. He'd have better security knowing that I'm going to be healthier longer."

P.E.I. is the only province to not provide some funding for the machines, or to have made a commitment to. The machines provide an ongoing dose of insulin and keep blood glucose levels closer to normal.

Romans has launched a petition asking the provincial government to cover the costs for these pumps, which cost $5,000 to $7,000.
