Women misunderstood medical procedures: Cameron

A Summerside doctor told a medical inquiry Tuesday two patients simply misunderstood legitimate medical procedures when they accused him of grabbing their breasts.

A Summerside doctor told a medical inquiry Tuesday two patients simply misunderstood legitimate medical procedures when they accused him of grabbing their breasts.

Dr. Douglas Ian Cameron was testifying before a board struck by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of P.E.I. to investigate allegations of professional misconduct against him.

Two women also testified Tuesday. One said Cameron pinched her nipples, and the other accused him ofgrabbing her by both breasts and twisting so hard that it left welts.

Cameron testified one woman wanted a mammogram, so he decided to give her a breast examination. He said that he didn't ask if he could perform a breast examination, and that he didn't tell her he was giving her one.

He said that woman later got angry may because he refused to write a prescription for narcotics.

Regarding the second woman, Cameron testified he gave her a standard physical examination for a disorder called fibromyalgia. That exam requires a doctor to press severalpoints on the torso, and Cameron says the woman must have misunderstood when he pressed her chest.

He testified that patient was receiving workers compensation benefits for her fibromyalgia, and she wanted more money from the Workers Compensation Board. He said his exam determined she no longer had the disorder.

Cameron said that he didn't tell the woman he had determined she no longer had the disorder, nor was there any mention of the exam in her medical files.

The panel has 30 days to decide the outcome of the case.

Cameron's licence to practise medicine was suspended by the college pending the outcome of the complaints. One of the women has also lodged a complaint with the Summerside Police Department.
