2 dead after vehicle crashes and burns near Estevan, Sask.

RCMP are investigating a crash near Estevan, Sask. that left two people dead and a vehicle burned "beyond recognition."

RCMP say two people died in a crash after the vehicle they were riding in crashed into a semi and caught on fire.

The collision took place on Highway 18 near Estevan, Sask.

Police responded to the scene at around 9:18 a.m. CST.

Officers say the vehicle was driving eastbound and crossed into the westbound lane, where it collided with the truck and ignited. The truck was hauling a trailer loaded with fertilizer.

A news release from the RCMP states thatEstevan Fire and Rescue worked to put out the fire, butthevehicle was burned "beyond recognition."

The two passengers of the destroyed vehicle were pronounced dead at the scene. Estevan EMS treated the driver and lone occupant of the truckfor minor injuries.

RCMP have not yet released the names of the deceased and the crash is still under investigation.

Investigators are on the scene at Highway 18, about 15 kilometres west of Estevan. The area is expected to be closed for up to eight hours and drivers are advised to find an alternate route.
