300+ drunk driving charges laid in July, triple last year's rate

Saskatchewan drivers were hit with more than 300 drunk driving-related charges in July triple the number racked up last year.

113 work zone speeders ticketed, Saskatchewan Government Insurance report says

Impaired driving charges tripled in Saskatchewan in July compared to a year ago.

Saskatchewan drivers were hit with more than 300 drunk driving-related charges in July triple the number racked up last year.

That's according to the latest enforcement roundup Thursday from Saskatchewan Government Insurance.

In July 2015, there were 100 impaired driving-related charges laid, a number that doesn't include Saskatoon charges.

The equivalent tally in July 2016 was 315 charges, although with Saskatoon charges added, the total is 338.

There's no obvious explanation for the sharp increase, according to SGI.

Every month, Saskatchewan police put a "traffic safety spotlight" on certain driving offences, and for July it was work zones and aggressive driving.

Officers issued 113 tickets in work zones and 5,338 other speeding or aggressive driving-related tickets last month, SGI says.
