No need to look too far to have a fun vacation with the kids.

Jenn Smith Nelson is a writer and a travel columnist on The Morning Edition. She shares her tips on a few ways to explore near your own backyard.

1. Lumsden (25 minutes)

If you have a few hours, consider a trip to the valley. Stop at one of the market gardens to pick up some fresh produce, then circle around the town looking at all the lovely old homes and large trees. If you plan ahead, consider a stop at nearby Beaver Creek Ranch to visit or ride.

2. Indian Head (47 minutes)

Learn about the Bell Barn and its historical significance. Learn about local legends in the Sports Hall of Fame. Don't miss going for ice cream. If you are lucky enough to go there on a Friday, hit up the local Farmer's Market. It's located in the park beside the town office. Call ahead to check on times.

3. Moose Jaw (52 minutes)

Jenn's top recommendations include a visit to Wakamow Valley where you'll find 20 kilometres of trails. Little ones love the trains at the Western Development Museum.

You can also learn all about the burrowing owls at the Saskatchewan Burrowing Owl Interpretive Centre, or just explore the city and find all of the many murals. Of course, you can also take a dip at the mineral spa.

Just outside of town you'll find the Sukanen Museum Ship and Pioneer Village and Deitrich Pottery studio where you can find hand crafted one-of-a-kind pieces.

4. Buffalo Pound Provincial Park (59 minutes)

Trails, trails and more trails. Walk the trails of Nicolle Flats three kilometres each waykeeping your eyes open for birds, bison and other wildlife. The park also offers numerous trails for mountain bike riding. This is a great place to do a quick overnight camp.

5. Claybank (1 hour, 7 minutes)

This national historic site is fascinating for kids and adults alike. Let the kids roam around the Massold Clay Canyons and the 256-acre historic Clay Pits. The wildlife area adjacent to the Claybank Brick Plant is a good place to burn off some extra energy.
