Two Americans trying to cross the border at North Portal, Sask., have been charged after a number of guns were found in their possession.

In one of the cases, the Canadian Border Services Agency charged a 50-year-old man Saturday with three violations of the Customs Act.

The agency said they searched his vehicle and found a number of undeclared weapons, including:

  • a loaded .40 calibre semi-automatic pistol.
  • a loaded 9 mm semi-automatic pistol.
  • 11 overcapacity magazine clips.
  • an undeclared shotgun.
  • parts for an M-16 assault rifle.
  • two prohibited butterfly knives and
  • two prohibited switchblade knives.

The Belding, Mich., resident is scheduled to appear in Regina provincial court on Aug. 27.

Meanwhile, a second man caught with undeclared guns at the border has been fined $3,000.

A 65-year-old man from Idaho was fined $3,000 for trying to bring prohibited weapons into Canada. Here are the three pistols and other items seized at North Portal, Sask., earlier this week. (Canadian Border Services Agency)

The 65-year-old from Coeur dAlene, Idaho, pleaded guilty to three counts under the Customs Act after three loaded pistols, a .45 and a .22 calibre, plus a 9 millimetre, were found in his possession on July 21. That seizure also happened at North Portal.

CBSA says its officers in southern Saskatchewan have seized 24 undeclared firearms this year.
