6 learn they'll spend Christmas in jail

It was a good-news, bad-news kind of Christmas Eve for some accused people down at the Saskatoon provincial courthouse.

The good news is that they'll begetting a Christmas dinner with all the trimmings.

The bad news is that it's going to be served behind bars. Six of eight people appearing in court Monday morning were remanded in custody.

That means they'll be spending Christmas at the Saskatoon Correctional Centre.

The centre does a turkey dinner for inmates. Prisoners also get gifts put together by the Salvation Army.

Still, people charged with offences often do some fast talking so they can stay with their families on Dec. 25.

The last accused on the morning docket appeared charged with attacking a police cruiser. He also breached a condition that he not drink.

In arguing, unsuccessfully, for his own release, the man said, "I didn't know Listerine was alcohol."

The courts will be closed on Christmas day.
