Accused murderer Clayton Eichler chooses trial by judge alone

A Regina man accused of the first-degree murder of two women has elected to be tried by a judge alone, rather than have a jury hear the case.

Clayton Eichler will go on trial in September for the murders of two Regina women, Kelly Goforth and Richele Bear.

He had initially agreed to be tried by judge and jury, but changed that election earlier this week in Court of Queen's Bench in Regina.

The crown agreed the change.

In December 2013, Eichler was charged with second-degree murder in connection with the death of 21-year-old Kelly Goforth.

The charge was later upgraded to first-degree murder.

In May 2014, Eichler was charged with first-degree murder in the death of 23-year-old Richele Bear.

His trial is set to run from September 19 through 30.
