Ashes to turf: Friend honours man's wish to be part of Mosaic Stadium

The dying wish of a fan of the Saskatchewan Roughriders who wanted to have his ashes spread on Taylor Field at Mosaic Stadium in Regina was honoured on the weekend.

Ken Morrison died in August from cancer at the age of 62.

Even though he was from Alberta, the Riders were his favourite team. The task of dispersing the ashes fell to Morrison's longtime friend, Jim Sutherland, who made the trip to Regina from Red Deer on Saturday.

"He had enough time to make decisions and one of his decisions and wishes was that some of his ashes get transported out here to Taylor Field," Sutherland said. "He was a huge Rider fan ... it was something he really wanted."

Sutherland wasn't sure he would be able to manage it but once he explained the situation to the club, the honour was done.

"We got him in the end zone," Sutherland said.

Morrison's goal was to be on the turf and the ashes were sprinkled on the outer edge of the south-east end zone.

Sutherland said his friend was aware of the fact that a new football stadium was being built and the current site would be demolished at the end of the season.

"We got it done for him and now he's where he wanted part of his spirit to be," he said.
