Cannabis, alcohol banned for 1st weekend of camping at Sask. provincial parks

Lovers of the outdoors rejoicecamping season is here. But don't party too hard.

Victoria Day long weekend marks the start of the camping season in Saskatchewan provincial parks.

During the Victoria Day long weekend, an alcohol ban is in place at provincial parks and recreation sites due to concerns about disturbances and intoxication-related vandalismand there's also a ban on cannabis at the parks.

Although it'sillegal to consume pot in public spaces, Saskatchewan's Cannabis Control Act considers a campsite a private place which means when the alcohol ban isn't in place, campers can consume cannabis at provincial parks.

The ban is in place May 16-20.

The province says violators will have their alcohol or cannabis seized, and may also face fines or eviction from the park.

There's also some good news for those getting an early start on the camping season.

Between May 16 and June 24, a discountof $5 off per night will apply to electric, non-electric or economy campsites.

"This spring discount provides an opportunity for guests to enjoy the parks at a very affordable rate," a news release issued by the Ministry of Parks, Culture and Sport read.

"Spring is the perfect time to get out and explore while parks are still quiet."
