Carrot River mourns 3 teens who died in highway crash

People in Carrot River, Sask., are mourning the deaths of three teenageboys who died in a highway crash Sunday.

Their car was stopped at a construction zone on Highway 6 and was hit from behind. The teens, 14, 15 and 17, died at the scene RCMP said.

On Tuesday, CBC's Ryan Pilon reported that the mood in Carrot River was sombre. The population of the town is about 1,000 and the teens were heavily involved with school and community activities.

"The loss of three young, vibrant people, students, is hard to accept," Bob Gagne, the mayor of Carrot River, said. "They were in the prime of their youth, and they were very involved in the community, sports minded, they played baseball, hockey, football, and were involved in the drama club, and they had many friends."

On the school's football field friends put together a memorial of football helmets, jerseys and roses.

Kevin Trew, the town administrator, said many people are calling to ask how they can help.

"People in the community are looking for something, looking for something to do to help some of the families," Trew said. "Grief is amazing, actually, what it can do for you and to you. And I think people are just looking for something."

For now, Trew said, the town is giving the families time and space to grieve and will provide help when it is requested.
