Catch of the day: Illegal fish-selling ring caught, fined $51K

An undercover operation has stopped an illegal fish-trafficking ring in the Buffalo Narrows area, the Saskatchewan government says.

An undercover operation has stopped an illegal fish-trafficking ring in the Buffalo Narrows area, the Saskatchewan government says.

Fifteen charges under fishing regulations were handed out to four men. As well, total fines topped $51,000.

The case dates back to 2011.

According to the province, undercover officers caught the four illegally trafficking walleye and outfitting without a licence.

The officers were also approached by subsistence fishermen who sold fish to them illegally, the province said.

One of the men wasfined close to$19,000 and has been prohibited from commercial fishing for two years.

The men recently pleaded guilty to their offences in provincial court.
