Dagenais preliminary hearing gets underway

The preliminary hearing for Curtis Dagenais, the Saskatchewan man charged with killing two RCMP officers, started Monday in a North Battleford courtroom.

The preliminary hearing for Curtis Dagenais, the Saskatchewan man charged with killing two RCMP officers, started Monday in a North Battleford courtroom.

Dagenais, 42, is accused of fatally shooting Const. Robin Cameron, 29, and Const. Marc Bourdages, 26, during a high-speed chase in the Spiritwood area in July, 2006.

Wearing black track pants and a long-sleeve purple T-shirt, with shackles around his legs, Dagenais was expressionless as he glanced briefly around the courtroom.

His father, Art Dagenais, sat nearby and watched intently as evidence was entered.

The defence immediately asked for and was granted a publication ban on any evidence presented by the 33 witnesses scheduled to be called during the next two weeks.

A preliminary hearing is held to determine whether there is enough evidence for a case to go to trial.
