'Might get punched in the face': Former CFL kicker Damon Duval visits Regina for charity

The man who kicked the winning field goal in the infamous 13th man Grey Cup was a bit scared when he first returned to Saskatchewan in 2015.

Damon Duval was the kicker for the Montreal Alouettes when they beat the Saskatchewan Roughriders with a last play field goal in the 2009 Grey Cup. Duval missed a last-second field goal, but the Riders had 13 on the field instead of 12,giving him another shot.

On Sunday, Duval gave back to the province he left heartbroken by appearing at the Lions Celebrity Weekend, a fundraiser for the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

"I was a little scared last year when we did this the first year in Yorkton," Duval said. "You know, coming back with the history of the game and the kick that, you know, I might get punched in the face or something."

Luckily, Duval said his visit to Regina has "been very nice".

"I think for the most part all the fans realize and understand I was just out doing my job and that's the way it went," he said. "As they got to talk to me and got to know me a little bit they understood I'm not a bad guy."

Former Rider defensive tackle Marcus Adams was also part of the fundraiser and played for Saskatchewan in 2009. Adams said nearly seven years later, he's still reminded of that heartbreaking loss.

"It crosses my mind at least once a day," he said. "So I never forget that night. That was a tough pill to swallow and it still is."
