Flood waters, worry hit RM of Cupar, Sask.

Flood waters and concern arerisingin the RM of Cupar and the nearby town of Southey.

A dozen homes are facing imminent flooding, while an estimated 40 roads are underwater in the RM.
Administrators have contacted the Water Security Agency for help.They have also applied for the Provincial Disaster Assistance Program.

"This is the worst I've seen it," said Ron Olson, a contractor who has been busy sandbagging and trying to stem the waters.

Olson estimates that in problem areas, another 90 to 120 centimetres of water could accumulate.
Though he says the work of his emergency team has potentially saved one home from flood damage already.

"I've got yards that we did last fall, late last fall, building their yards four feet and they're already underwater again," Olson added.

Berms have been constructed along parts of Highway 6 towards Southey to prevent further flooding.

Leigh Bishop, the mayor of Southey said he'sseeing major problems in areas of town as well.

"It's definitely a real concern. Not only in the west side of town but in the south as well," Bishop said.

Bill McCallum is one of the homeowners affected.

"All the reservoirs to the west of us are full to overflowing and it's all coming down this way. And unfortunately it stops here."

The long term impact on land is also being considered by farmers includingMichael Zurowski.He said he's lost 400,000 square metres of land that cannot be planted on for several years.

Neither the RM of Cupar nor Southey has ordered evacuations.
