Following air quality fix, Regina pool facility to reopen Sept. 13

Regina's biggest indoor swimming facility, the newly revamped Lawson Aquatic Centre, won't be reopened in time for the start of school.

Originally, officials said renovations to the Lawson would be complete by Sept. 1, a day before the Kindergarten-to-Grade-12 school year starts in Regina.

However, on Tuesday, the city said it will reopen on Sept. 13.

Following complaints about air quality problems related to chlorine that some parents said made their children feel sick, two independent consultants were brought in who recommended improvements.

Construction on the 40-year-old facility has sinceadded a new ultraviolet light water treatment systems, and an improved air venting system.

Officials said while fresh air distribution has been improved, they could not eliminate the use of chlorine, because of provincial regulations.

The repairs cost $1.8 million.
