Get tested today, urge Sask. organizers of HIV testing event

Saskatchewan residents are being urged to get tested on National HIV Testing Day, with events in Prince Albert, Regina and Saskatoon on Wednesday.

Saskatchewan residents are being urged to get tested on National HIV Testing Day, with events in Prince Albert, Regina and Saskatoon on Wednesday.

The event was first held in Saskatchewan which has the highest HIV rate of new infections ofall the provinces in 2016.

This is the first time the event is being held nationwide. Organizers in Saskatchewan say testing is crucial because one in five people who are infected with HIV are unaware of it.

The Saskatchewan Health Authority says testing is simpleand recommends routine testing for adults between 13 and 70 at least every five years.

Police, politicians and city council members will also be getting tested in an effort to reduce stigma.

Increased funding

The Saskatchewan government increased its funding for HIV programs and initiatives earlier this year.

The $700,000 top-up which comes on top of the province's base annual funding of $4 million will go to providing full coverage of HIV medications and services at AIDS Saskatoon and Westside Community Clinic in Saskatoon.

HIV testing has increased inthe last decade. According to the provincial government, more than 81,000 tests were done in 2017, a 71 per cent increase over 2008.
