Regina residents meet household donation needs for new refugees

Regina has all the household goods, furniture and clothing it needs to help the refugees expected to arrive in the city by 2016.

The city and the Regina Open Door Society made the announcement this afternoon stating "residents have shown an overwhelming amount of kindness."

"I am soproud of the community's strong desire to help and the outpouring of support for this group of newcomers," said Mayor Michael Fougerein a release this afternoon.

Those who still want to help the incoming refugees still have a few options:

• Form a group to privately sponsor refugees to come to Canada.
• Offer full-time or part-time opportunities to help refugees start their new life here.
• Volunteer with the Regina Open Door Society as a translator or long-term mentor.
• Warmly welcome refugees as they move into your neighbourhood.

The Regina Open Door Society expects five privately sponsored refugees to arrive in December. The sponsors will take care of basic and financial needs while RODS will help with language assistance and employment.

Government assisted refugees will not arrive until 2016. They will receive a year's worth of financial assistance from the government and settlement help from RODS.
