Police in Regina issued a news release Wednesday noting the accomplishments of the animals and the officers who work with them. They participated in the Canadian Police Canine Association Championship Trials held in Medicine Hat over several days last week. The competition concluded on Sunday.

Police dog teams from across Canada showed off their skills in a variety of competitions and demonstrations. Some related to general police work, others involved the detection of narcotics or explosives.

A total of 36 teams participated.

Regina police noted that several of their teams were in the top five of different categories.

Corp. Steven Wyatt and service dog Jax placed second in the building search category and fifth in the agility category. The team also took second place overall in the competition for general service dogs.

"All our members that attended displayed great skills in handling their dogs and went above and beyond while representing the Regina Police Service and the Canine Unit," the police said proudly in a news release, which noted the event is organized as a friendly competition that fosters networking between dog handlers and their respective agencies and included a public demonstration day.
