La Loche, Sask., accused school shooter returns to court in June

The 17-year-old accused of shooting multiple people in La Loche, Sask., in January will make a second videocourt appearance in June.

The teen is charged with the first-degree murder of four people, and the attempted murder of seven in the small Dene community, located on the shores of Lac La Loche in Northern Saskatchewan.

He has also been charged with one count of unauthorized possession of a firearm. The youth cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

The community of La Loche was left reeling on Jan. 22, after a shooter descended at a house in the community, then the high school.

The victims were two teachers, Marie Janvier, 21, and Adam Wood, 35, and brothers Dayne and Drayden Fontaine, aged 17 and 13 respectively.

Seven others were taken to hospital in Saskatoon for further care, some with life-threatening injuries. The judge has banned identifying those who survived the shootings.

The accused appeared by videoin La Loche this morning. He'll be back in court there, again by video, on June 6.

The small, remote community is located about 600 kilometres northwest of Saskatoon and has a population of about 3,000.
