Man shot, injured in northern Sask. by RCMP

A 34-year-old man who was shot and wounded by police in the northern community of Southend on the weekend is recovering in a Saskatoon hospital, RCMP said Monday.

A 34-year-old man who was shot and wounded bypolicein the northern community of Southendon the weekend is recovering in a Saskatoon hospital, RCMP said Monday.

The shooting took place Saturday afternoon when police responded to a disturbance call,RCMP said in a news release.

The man was holding a weapon and was considered dangerous to the public, police said.

Although they would not identify the type of weapon the man was carrying, they did confirm it was not a gun.

They also said the officer involved in the shooting was an experienced member of the Southend detachment.

The injured man was first taken to hospital in La Ronge andlater transported to Saskatoon, where he underwent surgery.

Police said he is expected to make a full recovery.

The shooting is under investigation by the Southend RCMP, along with the Saskatoon major crimes unit and the Prince Albert forensic identification unit.

This is thefifth shooting by a Saskatchewan police officer in the past seven months. Three of the people people involved in those shooting were killed.
