Comfy seats for all in new cinema complex for east Regina

In a world where movie cinemas are competing with an expanding array of entertainment options, a new development planned for east Regina is set to offer a very laid-back choice for film-goers: An auditorium filled with deep-cushioned recliners.

In a world where movie cinemas are competing with an expanding array of entertainment options, a new development planned for East Regina is set to offer a very laid-back choice for film-goers: An auditorium filled with deep-cushioned recliners.

The theatre chain Landmark Cinemas announced Thursday that a new eight-screen complex will be built in a commercial space known as Aurora, a retail centre that is under development in the city.

People with the project said the theatre will include powered recliners for all the seats.

While the larger chairs will reduce the house capacity, the developers noted that people will enjoy a more "personal space and a more relaxing, disruption free movie-going experience."

"Experiencing a movie on the big screen, in the comfort of a powered recliner seat, is an incredible entertainment experience," Bill Walker, from Landmark Cinemas, said.

An official with the company developing the land, Blair Forster, noted the movie theatre will join an array of large and small retail shops and restaurants.

"Entertainment and dining uses will be a major focus of the initial phase of the development, with the new Landmark Cinema providing the necessary anchor draw," Forster said in a statement, adding that more announcements about the site will be made in the months ahead.

The Aurora development includes 68 acres of land at Victoria Avenue E. and the new Trans-Canada Highway Bypass.

Also working on the project is Harvard Developments, based in Regina.

Landmark Cinemas, headquartered in Calgary, has 303 screens in 44 theatres throughout Western Canada, Ontario and the Yukon Territory.
