No more prayers at Regina City Council, mayor says

In light of today's Supreme Court ruling, the practice of beginning Regina City Council meetings with a prayer will end, Mayor Michael Fougere says.

On Wednesday, Canada's highest court ruled the municipal council in the Quebec town of Saguenay cannot open its meetings with a Catholic prayer because it infringes on freedom of conscience and religion.

"Our solicitor is still reviewing that, but it's pretty clear that that's disallowed," Fougere said. "We will be suspending that from our council."

Regina's prayer is "informal" but "it's a prayer nonetheless," Fougere said.

Fougere added in the 17 years he's been on council, nobody has everycomplained about it.
