Pit bull used as weapon against officers, police allege

Three people have been charged with using dogs as weapons following a drug raid on the weekend where Regina police shot and killed a pit bull.

The raid happened around 5:30 p.m. Sunday, when police and the SWAT team converged on a house in the 1200 block of Robinson St. in the city's north-central area.

Police said whenofficers approached the rear door, an occupant of the house released a pit bull to attack them.

Police then shot the dog, killing it. Once police were inside the house, they found a second pit bull, which they restrained until it could be turned over to the Regina Humane Society.

Five men and two women, ranging in age from 18 to 26, were charged with more than 17 offences. Three of the men were charged with "assault with a weapon (pit bull)."

Other charges include trafficking marijuana, possession of drugs for the purpose of trafficking, andpossession of the proceeds of crime.

One of the men was charged with possession of a weapon a sword for a dangerous purpose.

Police said they seized an undisclosed quantity of marijuana.The seven charged made their first appearance in court on Monday.
