Student video contest launched for Saskatchewan's official fossil

Saskatchewan doesn't have a provincial fossil yet, but some school children could help change that.

The government is holding a contest where Grade 7 students can send in videos promoting their favourite fossils.

The kid with the best videowill earn his or her school a visit from a Royal Saskatchewan Museum paleontologist.

There will also be province-wide voting online in the spring of 2016 to pick the official fossil.

From mid-November until May, the public can visit the museum in Regina to see the provincial fossil exhibit where they will learn more about the sevencandidates.

The official fossil will be announced in May.

Here's the list of seven fossils on the short list:

• Brontothere (Megacerops sp.)
• "Big Bert" the Crocodile (Terminonaris robusta)
• "Mo" the Long-necked Plesiosaur (Terminonatator ponteixensis)
• Kyle Mammoth (Mammuthus sp.)
• Herschel Short-necked Plesiosaur (Dolichorhynchops herschelensis)
• Thescelosaur (Thescelosaurus assiniboiensis)
• "Scotty" the T. rex (Tyrannosaurus rex)
