People getting ready for the annual Queen City Marathon can help fire victims in Fort McMurray, Alta., by registering this week.

The Regina marathon attracts thousands of runners. This year, the race's organizers are hoping to attract even more participants in an effort to help people in need in Fort McMurray.

From May 7 to 13, $5 from every new registration will be donated to the Canadian Red Cross - Fort McMurray, Alberta fund.

You can find more information about the Red Cross effort here.

The fire this week in and around Fort McMurray is one of the largest natural disasters in Canadian history. Queen City Marathon organizers, in announcing their promotion, said "Our hearts go out to everyone who has lost so much."

This year, the two-day run event takes place Sept. 9-11. It is also a certified qualifying race for the Boston Marathon.
