University of Regina Rams head coach resigns

The head coach of the University of Regina Rams, Mike Gibson, has resigned.

The announcement came Sunday afternoon. Gibson has accepted a position as the offensive line coach and run game coordinator for the Edmonton Eskimos.

"I think the future is very bright for this program and whoever does come in and sits in that chair, I think is coming into a good situation," Gibson said.

Gibson has been head coach of the Rams for one season. Prior to coaching the Rams, he held positions with the CFL in Winnipeg, Saskatchewan, Hamilton, Calgary and Ottawa.

Gibson said the perception of the team today is better than what it was a year ago.

Under Gibson's guidance in 2015, however, the Rams didn't win any games.

Opportunity taken for family reasons

Gibson said he is trying make the best decision for his family, at a late point in his career. Gibson has been coaching for 38 years.

"It wasn't that I was unhappy here. I could have stayed here for a long time, but an opportunity presented itself," he said.

A national search has begun for the team's next head coach.
