RCMP introduces new initiative to combat drunk driving

The RCMP are aiming to reduce the amount of fatalities and serious injury car collisions from impaired driving in Saskatchewan by educating the hospitality industry about the consequences of over-serving and allowing patrons to drive away under the influence of alcohol.

The initiative is a joint effort between the RCMP "F" Division, Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority and local Fire Department officials.

Starting this month, the three agencies will be travelling throughout the province to licensed establishments to educate proprietors.

"Through our joint efforts in conducting liquor permitted establishment checks we want to ensure public safety," wrote Sgt. Al Hofland with RCMP Traffic Services in Saskatchewan, in an email.

"Part of the plan will be to include conducting roadside checks in the area and on our public roadways in an ongoing effort to combat impaired driving."

He added that the aim of the program is to see all patrons who leave licensed establishments plan a safe ride home.
