Regina dog rescue group needs more foster care volunteers

A Regina dog rescue group says it is currently unable to take in any more stray dogs.

CC RezQs Regina said the decision is "very sad"but they were forced to implement an "intake freeze" as of Aug. 16.

The group rescues unwanted dogs from First Nations. Cady Shaw, the director of adoptions for CC RezQs, said it needs dozens of volunteers to provide temporary foster care for dogs.

"If we can't pull these dogs off the reserve that need help, many of them die," Shaw said. "Puppies get eaten by other dogs or wild animals. The injured ones just can't make it anymore and they die."

When stray dog populations get out of control, Shaw said it also leads to culls, "which is just going out and mass shooting them basically."

CC RezQs said it covers all of the expenses involved in temporarily taking care of a dog.

According to Shaw, a dog typically needs foster care for about four weeks before it finds a permanent home.
