"This is something that I thought would never affect me or my friends or my family and because it's a cultural thing we don't normally think that it's going to affect us and it's hit home pretty hard," Limacher said outside provincial court in Regina.

Limacher saidhis friend had recently gotten a retrieving dog for hunting and was training it north of the city on Sunday afternoon, when he was hit and killed.

Limacher saidKaufmann and the dog were outside the vehicle, possibly on the tailgate, when they were struck by the other vehicle.

"Tanner has, had a wife and two small kids and it's just not fair. He was minding his own business walking his dog, north of Regina, just doing what he loved," Limacher said.

With what appeared to be a cut above his eye,Heid made a brief court appearance in ReginaTuesday. He's expected back in court by video on Wednesday.
