It was the wettest night of the year for many Saskatchewan communities and one of the rainiest spots was Regina.

The Queen City received 79 millimetres on Monday.Enough rain fell on the city in the past 24 hours to fill about 5,000 Olympic-sized swimming pools.

Sheets of rain left some residents with water in some basements and giant puddles on their streets.

It was the same story around the province. The community receiving the most rain was Coronach, which got85 millimetres.

Other communities that received significant rain (up to 6 a.m. CSTincluded:

  • Swift Current: 61 mm.
  • Assiniboia: 50 mm.
  • Moose Jaw: 49 mm.
  • Lucky Lake: 47 mm.
  • Yorkton: 44 mm.
  • Saskatoon: 38 mm.
  • Elbow: 37 mm.
  • Hudson Bay: 32mm.

Another 15 to 25 millimetres will likely be added to those totals today as a storm system tracks east across southern Saskatchewan, Environment Canada meteorologist Mike McDonald said.

There's a rainfall warning still in place for Regina and other communities, but also a wind warning.

Sustained winds of 70 kilometres per hour with gusts to 90 km/h are expected, the weather agency said.

Damage to buildings, such as to roof shingles and windows, may occur.
