Humane Society suggests cats for the warehouse with Barn Buddies program

A warehouse setting may be the perfect home for a cat that maybe isn't a good fit for adoption by a family, according to the Regina Humane Society which is promoting its Barn Buddies program.

A warehouse setting may be the perfect home for a cat that maybe isn't a good fit for adoption by a family, according to the Regina Humane Society which is promoting its Barn Buddies program.

"Only cats without other options are eligible to be in the Barn Buddy program," the society said. "If you have a working operation or safe, heated outbuilding, there are cats that desperately need you."

The group noted that such cats may "help keep down the rodent population."

The society is offering such cats to people with a suitable location and who are willing to make a commitment to care for the animal.

Bill Thorn, from the Regina Humane Society, noted that Barn Buddy cats would thrive patrolling barns, shops, garages and warehouses. All they need is a warm and safe place to live as well as fresh water, food and veterinary care (when needed).

"Our Saskatchewan winters can be pretty cold, so we don't want to see these cats living outside," Thorn said.

Thorn emphasizedthe cats cannot live on mousing alone.

No temperament for cuddling

"Often they're feral," Thorn said, talking about why such cats are not available for a regular adoption. "They've lived outside their entire lives. They were born outside, they've had to fend for themselves and, even though they're domesticated animals, they're acting in a more wild, if you will, way."

He said a home environment wouldn't work for them.

"They're just not suitable to cuddle up with on a couch and watch TV. Their temperament just isn't going to allow that."

He added that, for the first two or three weeks the cats should be kept in a secure space so that they don't wander away.

All cats available for adoption through the Barn Buddies program are spayed or neutered, health checked and vaccinated by the Regina Humane Society.

"It's a program that's been able to save the lives of a lot of cats," Thorn said.

As well, while donations are always appreciated, the cats will be available with no adoption fee to individuals and businesses.

"While Barn Buddies cats may not enjoy the company of humans like other cats, most cats do enjoy the company of other felines," the society added. "We highly recommend adopting at least two Barn Buddies. They will have companionship and you will have twice the benefit."
