Regina man pleads guilty to criminal negligence causing death of Piapot First Nation woman

A second-degree murder charge against a 29-year-old Regina man has been stayed. The accused, however, entered a guilty plea to the charge of criminal negligence causing death.

A 29-year-old Regina man is serving an eight-year prison sentence for criminal negligence causing the death of a 31-year-old Piapot First Nation woman.

Ethan Riley Sunshine was originally charged with second-degree murder, but on Monday that charge was stayed when Sunshine pleaded guilty in Regina Court of King's Benchto criminal negligence causing the death of Kihaw Fox.

Fox died on April 22, 2023, at a home in Punnichy, about 100 kilometres northeast of Regina. She was from Piapot First Nation, about 70 kilometres south of Punnichy.

Sunshine, then 28, was arrested shortly after on George Gordon First Nation, south of Punnichy, according to RCMP.

In addition to being charged in Fox's death, Sunshine was also facing three firearms-related charges. Those charges were stayed at his sentencing on Monday. After credit for his time in custody, Sunshine has six years left of the eight-year sentence to serve.
