Future of the Regina Pats bright after successful season

The Regina Pats cleaned out their lockers and said their good-byes on Thursday morning. The Pats lost a hard fought seven game series to the Red Deer Rebels.

"As coaches and players we believed we were going to win the series. So it's hard in that way," said headcoach John Paddock.

As the third youngest team in the league, the Patsexceeded the expectations of many and the future looks bright.

"We're really excited about next year," Paddock said."But it's about building up the program and at the proper times going for something special."

Hometown captain says emotional goodbye

Pats captain and 20-year-old Regina productColby Williamsplayed his final game for the club. Williams missed most of the season with a hand injury but made it back for the playoff run.

"To represent Regina as a hometown kid -- hopefully it brings younger kids to try and strive for the same goal," Williams said. "It's tough to see it go by so fast but it was a good ride," an emotional Williams added.

Williams and his teammates credited the Pats ownership and the leadership of the coaching staff for the team's resurgence in the league.

"It's not about coach and player, it's about making friendships and that's what theydid so well," Williams said.

Pats could lose scoring champ

Another player singing the praises of his coaches - WHL scoring champAdam Brooks.

"This coaching staff came in andI've said it a million times, they changed my career," said theWinnipeg, Manitoba product.

Brooks, 18, had 11 points in 2014-15 and exploded for 120 points this year.His rise has helped the Pats achieve success. But Brooks is quick to thank his coaches.

"I think everyone in the dressing room knows we have the best coaching staff in the league," Brooks said.

Pair of Pats look forward to draft

Brooks hopes to hear his name called in this June's NHL draft. Hehas been passed over twice and if he's picked, he could play professionally next year or come back to the Pats.

"In my mind I'm going to be a Regina Pat for my 20-year-old year," Brooks said.

The most recent NHL central scouting rankings haveBrooks 72nd among North American skaters. His teammate Sam Steel is ranked 30th.
