Regina Police asking for public's help to find Sunday night restaurant shooter

Regina Police are asking for the public's help in finding a suspect who shot a 34-year-old man in a restaurant on Sunday night.

Policearrived at Viet-Trung Garden, on the 1900 block of Albert Street, after receiving multiple calls about a shooting.

The owner of the restauranttold CBC he was in the kitchen when the shooting occurred. He saidhe thought heheard firecrackers going off in the restaurant, later realizing it was gun shots.

He said the victim was a regular customer. Although the customer was alone, he had ordered a dinner for four saying his other guests would be arriving shortly.

The customer was still alone at the table, according to the owner, whenthe suspect entered the restaurant and shot the victim in the back.

The shooter quickly fled, he added.

The owner said there were about 50 people in his restaurant at the time, but only about 10 people on the side where the shooting occurred.No one was able to give a description of the suspect, he said.

The man who was shot was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and remains there in stable condition. There were no other injuries.

Acting Police Chief Corey Zaharuk said the incident is "very concerning" and "incredibly reckless" because it took place in a public setting where there were lots of people around. He said there were dozens of patrons in the restaurant when the shooting happened which makes this shooting different from others that have taken place in the city.

Zaharuk said this was not a random act of violence but it is too early to connect this crime to any others that have taken place in the city.

Zaharuk said the investigation is being led by the major crimes unit and many police officers have been assigned to it.

Police would not give any more details about the shooter, the incident or their investigation.
