Regina, Saskatoon tops on crime severity index: StatsCan

Crime is down in Regina and Saskatoon but the two cities are still tops when it comes to the crime severity index, Statistics Canada says.

Crime is down in Regina and Saskatoon but the two cities are still tops when it comes to the crime severity index, Statistics Canada says.

A report on the 2013crime severity index (CSI), which is a measure of police-reportedcrime volume and the severity of crime, was released by StatsCan on Wednesday.

In 2013, Regina had the highest CSI of the 33 communities surveyed, scoring 109 on the index that uses 2006 as a baseline. That's despite a decrease of 7 per cent from the year before.

Saskatoon was second, with a CSI of 99.1.

If one looks onlyat thecrime rate (not factoring inseverity) Regina and Saskatoon are still No. 1 and No. 2 (with 8,069 and 7,958 reported crimes per 100,000 people, respectively).

Barrie, Ont., came in lowest on the crime severity index, with a rating of 42.8. Canada-wide, the rating was 68.7.

Meanwhile, Saskatchewan had the highestCSIamong the provinces, as well as the highest youth crime severity index.
