Gary Merasty, who represents the northern riding of Desnethe-Missinippi-Churchill River, says his resignation will be effective the end of August.

Merasty said in a news release Wednesday he is leaving to pursue an opportunity in the private sector. He hasn't saidwhere he is going.

"It is with a heavy heart that I announce my resignation from the Parliament of Canada today [Thursday]," Merasty said. "I regret to be stepping down at this exciting time of renewal and revitalization for the Liberal party."

He also said "family considerations are paramount for me at this point in my life."

The rookie MP won his seat in 2006 by only 67 votes, beating incumbent Conservative Jeremy Harrison.

Harrison, however, alleged there had been polling station irregularities that contravened election laws, including ballot-box stuffing. A judge later confirmed Merasty's win.

Harrison isnow running for a seat in the provincial legislature as a Saskatchewan Party candidate.

Merasty is expected to speak publicly about his decision to quit politics some time Thursday, officials from his office said.

With Merasty gone, Ralph Goodale will become Saskatchewan's lone Liberal MP. The other 12 Saskatchewan MPs are Conservatives.

Whena seat becomes vacant, the prime minister has 180 days to call a byelection.
