Sask. RCMP cut down 3150 'suspected marijuana' plants

A Saskatchewan farmer stumbled across acrop of plants he wasn't expecting on his landnorth of Wasecaearlier this week.

According to RCMP, the man called police on Monday to report there was marijuana growing in his field.

Police ended up cutting down 3150 "suspected marijuana" plants. They said samples of the intruding, suspicious species have been sent for testing with Health Canada, in order to determine whether they are marijuana or hemp.

Amember withMaidstoneRCMP detachment told CBC News that those involved with the investigation are quite certain the plants are marijuana. The member explained that typically a farmer needs a permit to grow hemp and in this case, there was no permit for the land in question.

Last year, threesimilar filesin the Saskatoon, Fort Qu'Appelle and Battleford areaswere investigated by SaskatchewanRCMP.In all cases, the plants turned out to be hemp.
